Descripción

The construction of the Cemetery is part of the historical context of European migration in the Region of Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctic of the late nineteenth century, this was motivated by the gold findings in Tierra del Fuego, by the introduction of the sheep for the massive upbringing, and by the facilities given by the Chilean state for the establishment of free settlers in the territory, for purposes of settlement and development of economic activities, affirming the presence of Chile in territories of Southern Patagonia.

In 1894 Governor Señoret bought land far from the population, north of the city, for the establishment of the Punta Arenas Municipal Cemetery, whose official founding document was signed by President Jorge Montt.
This cemetery was recognized as the icon of the region in the public contest "15 Classics of Chile in its Bicentennial", convened by the government in 2010.

The values on which the declaration of this national monument is based are; historical, architectural, stylistic and originality.
The municipal cemetery evidences the set of influences of different nationalities of immigrants that arrived in the region and that make up the Magellanic culture. In this place rest the remains of those pioneers, settlers and merchants.

At the architectural level the cemetery is located on Av. Bulnes presents a section of trees planted with birches and Canadian cypresses. Its architectural elements are integrated as a harmonious and homogeneous set.

The necropolis has an area of 4 hectares, presents an esplanade and a central plaza crowned by a large cross donated by Alfonso Menéndez. The eclectic nature of its architecture, which shows in its access building is a manifestation of the European avant-garde. It is rich in styles and ornaments, both in the mausoleums and in its building. The delicacy of the materials and sculptural work highlight the quality of its craftsmen and builders.

It is the southernmost secular cemetery in Chile, which brings together different creeds and customs of migrants that forged the development of Magallanes.
